2003

It's been a while since I updated the diary. I have a very good excuse, really. She has been vacationing with Phil Lambos in Otsego, MN. Not so much a vacation, as a motorcycle spa... The CBRlist archives tell it best

New list of stuff:
braided steel brake lines
new brake pads
unseized calipers
fixed shifter
tightened head bearings
replaced speaker wire
did whatever you have to do to forks
new dust covers for forks
new grips and bar ends
new mirror on right side
other adjustments too numerous to list

"Phil" rocks. ;-)

Now, I'm not sure it was too smart to start it in the basement afterwards...

After leaving Minneapolis, I headed west for 8 days of dog shows.

I got a lot of riding in in Montana, looking for a show dog that escaped from his crate my first night in Missoula. Without the bike, I could have never covered the miles as efficiently as I did. Without the new brakes, I would have probably been killed a half dozen times over. The RD was the perfect bike to use to search city streets for a small dog - though searching for a dog while riding a RD is not probably the best way to stay alive.... (Yes, I got him back safely - 3 days later he walked back into my campsite.)

I planned to winterize the RD today. Probably the most beautiful day we've had all year. Calm, sunny, warm. No grasshoppers. On the other hand, it's a better day to ride!!! So, I go out to garage. Turn on key. Choke on. Gas flowing....

Kick.

Kick, kick kick.

Kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick. kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick, kick,

Finally. Drive out of garage, and park in front of the house where I leave her idling while I suit up.

Dead again.
Kick.

Push back into garage.

I guess it's a good day to winterize, after all. After I rest.

Update
I've been getting a lot of mail asking when I'll be updating the diary. Well, things haven't gone that well this year for riding - a cold spring and busy travel schedule delayed getting her out of mothballs.

I finally did in July - only to encounter problems with the right cylinder firing reliably. A change of spark plugs and fixing a leaky fuel filter did not solve the problem. So, until I have the extra cash to have the bike looked at by my mechanic, I don't anticipate any more updates.

:(

Just another installment of my sucky life.

2007 update - I continue to get notes from readers who stumble in to the bike diary. Yes, I still have Aretha, yes, she runs just fine now. I haven't updated as I haven't had much to write about. My riding the last couple of years has been local, and occasional. Once you've been on some of the roads mentioned in these pages, it's difficult to get enthused about riding our straight and windy highways.

But thanks for stopping in, and thanks for your kind words. Safe riding!
