1970 Miniature Schnauzer Sire Survey

Taking the pedigrees of the 107 dogs listed in the 1970 Schnauzer Shorts Stud Register, I've created pie charts to illustrate the share of the gene pool then being taken up by certain tail-male ancestors. I chose those dogs who seemed to be forming secondary sire lines within the 4 major Display branches (Ruffian, Tribute, Delegate, Diplomat), as well as the other Display sire lines that were still in existence at the time, and the two non-Display black import lines.

The second chart groups these secondary branches into the major branches of Display sons: Ruffian (Sky Rocket's First Stage is set apart), Delegate (Penlan Paragon), Tribute lines, Diplomat lines, the remaining Display lines, plus the two non-Display black import lines.

Now, let's see what's changed in the forty years from 1970 to 2009.

These charts should serve as a reminder that the decisions we make each day can have long term consequences for the gene pool. They also emphasize the importance of doing what we can to maintain and improve what few alternative sire lines remain.
